Between the Brazos and Oyster Creek
Rosharon sits where FM 521 meets FM 1462, about fourteen miles north of Angleton and seven and a half miles east of the Brazos River, per the Handbook of Texas. It began as a stop on the Columbia Tap Railroad and later took its name from the Rose of Sharon Garden Ranch. Oyster Creek winds through the same corridor, so residents live with two waterways that respond to rain far upstream.
River flooding is slow and long
Unlike a flash flood, a Brazos River rise can build over days and stay high for days. In June 2016 a Brazoria County flood bulletin put the river at Rosharon above 51 feet, reported FM 1462 at Oyster Creek impassable and noted residents on some county roads with water in their homes. Follow the official Brazos River gauge near Rosharon and NWS Houston/Galveston forecasts rather than guessing when water will crest or recede.
Road access on FM 1462 and FM 521
When the river is up, FM 1462 is often the problem road. During Harvey the National Weather Service listed FM 1462 among roads inundated by Brazos and Oyster Creek flooding. Plan for a company to arrive only after roads reopen, and never drive around barricades.
Floodwater contamination and what gets removed
River water carries silt, fuel and other contaminants from upstream. Anything porous that soaked in it, including carpet, pad, insulation and the lower part of drywall, usually has to be removed rather than dried. Hard surfaces get cleaned before drying starts. Wear boots and gloves, and keep children out until cleanup is done.
Newer subdivisions and older rural homes
Rosharon has both newer subdivisions and older homes on larger lots. Newer houses may sit higher, while older ones can be closer to grade, but every property is different. Your own elevation and flood zone matter more than the neighborhood’s reputation.
Flood insurance has a waiting period
The Texas Department of Insurance notes that most flood policies take 30 days to take effect. Buying coverage after the river starts rising is usually too late, so review it well before hurricane season.
Keeping a river-flood record
River floods unfold over days, which gives you time to document. Photograph the water level against a fence post or the house each morning, note the dates and save NWS forecast screenshots. A clear timeline helps your flood insurer and helps the cleanup company understand how long materials sat in water.
Leaks that have nothing to do with the river
Most Rosharon calls on a dry day are ordinary household leaks: a water heater in the garage, a failed toilet supply or an AC drain in the attic. Those are handled the same way as anywhere else: stop the water, then call.

Rosharon questions
How long until a river flood recedes?
It varies with upstream rain. Follow NWS forecasts and the official gauge; no one can promise a date.
Is river flooding covered by homeowners insurance?
Usually not. Flood is generally a separate policy, often through the NFIP.
Can I start cleanup before the adjuster comes?
Ask your insurer. Document everything first, keep receipts and take reasonable steps to prevent more damage.
